Iceland Cultural Preview: Translation Between Icelandic and English (LISTEN)

We’re headed to Airwaves to cover Iceland Airwaves Music Festival and other cultural stories beginning Sunday, 10/30! Follow along on our adventures via our Iceland Airwaves 2016 daily blog and hear an Icelandic cultural preview interview below.

Because of the unique characteristics of the Icelandic language and English, there are words that do not translate between the two languages. Cultural differences also play a role in the complexity of expression and interpretation.

Alda Sigmundsdóttir, former translator and author of a book on the Icelandic language called The Little Book of Icelandic, and Gauti Kristmannsson, Translation Studies Professor at the University of Iceland, explain why some words between the Icelandic language and English are untranslatable.
