Iceland Airwaves Cultural Audio Story: Street Art (LISTEN)

Stay tuned right here for our Iceland Airwaves 2015 final radio documentary, which will air on WCRX-FM 88.1 in Chicago (live stream here) in the near future. In the meantime, check out one of the during audio stories the students produced below and check out previews, reviews and more on our Iceland Airwaves 2015 home page.

Although most cities have street art or graffiti Iceland’s is particularly prominent and beautiful. This is partly due the city of Reykjavík clamping down on street art in the city. This clampdown forced artists to only do street art with permission in designated areas causing a fall in tags and poorly-written names and a rise in actual pieces and murals, some of which have become legitimate tourist attractions.

Sara Riel discusses the history of Iceland’s street art and Yasha Young explains the Iceland airwaves Wall Poetry collaboration.
